Climate change impacts on renewable energy supply

Renewable energy resources, which depend on climate, may be susceptible to future climate change. Here we use and integrated assessment models estimate this effect key renewables. Future potential costs are quantified across two warming scenarios for eight technologies: utility-scale rooftop photovoltaic, concentrated solar power, onshore offshore wind energy, first-generation lignocellulosic bioenergy, hydropower. The generated cost–supply curves then used system impacts. In a baseline scenario, the largest impact is increased availability of though depends strength CO2 fertilization. Impacts hydropower uncertain, with declines in some regions increases others, impacts power minor. mitigation these smaller, but response similar that scenario given larger reliance relies fields will altered by warming, estimated renewable technologies. Bioenergy sees global high uncertainty; other types see small change robust local trends.
